Volunteer Opportunity Description

The Circuit Court of Cook County recently initiated the Cook County Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program. The goal of the mediation program is to deliver needed services to Cook County homeowners in crisis as early as possible once the foreclosure process begins.

Volunteer attorneys will be a critical part of making this program possible. Attorneys interested in representing homeowners in pre-trial mediation are invited join us for a complimentary CLE on June 18, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at The Chicago Bar Association (321 S. Plymouth Court). Attorneys attending this training will learn:

• Basic information about mortgages and the foreclosure process
• Why mediation is an important tool for conflict resolution and how the mediation process works
• How to effectively represent your client in foreclosure mediation including information about relevant federal foreclosure relief programs, loss mitigation and negotiating a graceful exit
• How you can volunteer to represent homeowners in mediation through Chicago Volunteer Legal Services

Volunteer attorneys with all levels of experience are welcome. For newer attorneys and attorneys without experience in mortgage foreclosure, we will provide information in advance of the training to help orient you to the some of the relevant terms and issues.

Please consider providing your time and talent to help address the mortgage foreclosure crisis in Cook County. Please contact Veronica Rodriguez at 312-332-3508 or vrodriguez@cvls.org, with any questions and to register for the program.

CVLS volunteers and staff attorneys represent low-income Chicagoans (the working poor) in a wide variety of civil matters. While much of their work involves litigation, they also handle administrative and non-litigation matters. They handle cases involving divorce, custody, adult and minor guardianships, adoption, mortgage foreclosure defenses including cases involving fraud and predatory lending, tort defense, immigration, taxation, consumer contract issues, collection defense, bankruptcy, and landlord-tenant matters (including evictions, representing either landlords or tenants).  They draft powers of attorney and living/testamentary wills. CVLS' caseload is heavily weighted to family law, real estate and consumer issues. Supporting volunteers is a priority for CVLS staff.
