The Topic:
Assisted Living allows frail seniors to remain in the most homelike
environment for as long as possible. There is a growing concern about
the lack of wellbeing for residents. While Medicaid pays for assisted
living services in 41 states, no federal law regulates or even defines
assisted living.
The Presenter:
Toby S. Edelman is a senior policy attorney in the Washington, DC, office of the Center
for Medicare Advocacy. She has advocated on behalf of nursing home residents since
1977. From 1977 through 1999 she was a staff attorney with the National Senior
Citizens Law Center in Washington, DC, where she was involved in the development
and drafting of the Nursing Home Reform Law that was enacted by Congress in
December 1987.
The Christopher T. Hurley Lecture Series:
Christopher T. Hurley graduated from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in
1984. He is one of the leading trial lawyers in Chicago and a Fellow in the American
College of Trial Lawyers, and is the name partner of Christopher T. Hurley & Associates,
a law firm devoted solely to the representation of catastrophically injured persons.
Mr. Hurley has developed a particular expertise in the rights of elders abused or
neglected in nursing homes and has appeared on television and radio numerous
times as an expert. The Christopher T. Hurley Lecture Series was established in 2003
to help educate the bench, the bar, the legal community and the general public
about the manifold legal issues affecting the country’s senior citizens.
