Veterans are often confronted with a variety of personal and legal issues specifically related to their service in the military. Support services are a critical aspect in veterans healthy reentry into civilian life. Chicago is excited to announce our collaboration with John Marshall Law School’s Veterans’ Legal Support Clinic in a mediation program to assist veterans and their families.
In addition to legal support, the Clinic is developing a mediation program which will focus on the issues confronting veterans and their families. In this presentation we will explore how mediation can benefit them. The discussion will highlight the issues where mediation can be most effective and how education of the veteran community and the ADR community can promote use of these valuable services. We will outline the clinic’s process for selection of cases for mediation and how you, a member of the ADR community, may get involved. The opportunity to become a volunteer mediator for the Clinic will be discussed, including the use of co-mediation to mentor ADR students and new practitioners. In addition, training requirements specifically related to mediating veterans’ cases and how these can be fulfilled will be discussed. We will also learn about the Ombudsman Program of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) which investigates and recommends resolutions to employment-related complaints by National Guard and Reserve members.
This timely program provides an opportunity for qualified mediators to help our veterans in a valuable way. If you are a new practitioner looking for experience or an established practitioner interested in providing your skills, this is a program you will not want to miss.
