This training is to prepare volunteer attorneys to represent children in school expulsion cases. These matters are informal administrative hearings that are very similar to trials.

These cases typically involve:

  • Meeting and interviewing your client,
  • Investigating the case,
  • Talking to witnesses,
  • Handling an expulsion hearing at the Chicago Public Schools' Law Department (opening, direct and cross-examinations, closing) and
  • Negotiating with the Chicago Public Schools' Law Department.

There is minimal documentation and almost no discovery, other than witness interviews. These cases typically do not take more than 40 hours to complete and are usually completed within 45 days from accepting a matter.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Monica Llorente at m-llorente@law.northwestern.edu or (312) 503-6606.
